MARION – Gary Welsh Gabriel “Gabe”, age 74, of Marion, passed away peacefully
on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, surrounded by family after a brief illness.
Gary was born March 22, 1950, to the late Ellsworth and Doris (Welsh) Gabriel of
Prospect.
He joined the Marion Township Fire Department as an original member in 1971
and spent most of his firefighting days at Station #2 on the west end. In addition,
Gabe worked at Kroger and its various locations. He dedicated more than 25
years of service to both.
Those who knew Gabe will remember him for perch and walleye fishing at Lake
Erie, hitting the links with his golfing buddies and cheering on the Detroit Tigers,
aka Motor City Kitties. Without a doubt, Gabe’s biggest enjoyments were
watching his grandsons play sports and his annual Christmas Eve alert on
Santa’s whereabouts. Family and friends will forever remember his signature
phrase, “It seemed like the thing to do at the time.”
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca (Burk) Gabriel; son, Shane (Stacy)
Gabriel; daughter, Kelle Gabriel; stepson, Wyatt Burk; son-in-law, Drew
Sherbourne; and grandsons, Matthew Gabriel, Graham Sherbourne, Collin Gabriel
and Brycen Gabriel.
Per Gabe’s request, there will be no visitation or service held. The family plans to
have a “Gabe-worthy” gathering to share photos, memories and countless stories
at a later date.
